June 1989 - World War III has finally happened, and the USSR is winning. The remnant of the US Pacific Fleet is ordered to regroup in the South Pacific. The turning point may just be Auckland, New Zealand.
World War III erupts in the Northern Pacific with the US being landed a huge blow by the Soviets. The West Coast is invaded, the Military Command in Colorado and the Government in Washington destroyed. The remnants of the US Pacific Fleet are ordered to regroup in the South Pacific, and rally their allies. Sydney, Australia is attacked and the East Coast of Australia is blockaded by Soviet Submarines, making the port of Auckland, New Zealand the only viable stop to regroup, re-arm and refuel. We follow Michael Whareaitu, a junior naval officer in the Royal New Zealand Navy. Claire Whareaitu, the first female fighter pilot in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Gary Brewer, a tank commander in the Australian Army and, William Oliver, the USMC detachment commander aboard the USS Carl Vinson. These four will fight for their land and their survival, and the turning point of this new war may just be Auckland, New Zealand.

Dramatization of the first battle of World War II. The first target of German troops in the invasion of Poland is a small garrison at Westerplatte. Outnumbered and out-gunned, the Poles mount a fierce defense against an overwhelming enemy.
Westerplatte is a small peninsula at the entry to the Gdansk Harbour. Before World War II, it functioned as a Polish ammunition depot in the Free City of Danzig/Gdansk. Its crew consisted of one infantry company and a group of civilians, 182 people in total. It was the only Polish guard-post at the mouth of the Vistula River, with as little as five sentries, one field cannon, two anti-armour guns and four mortars. It was the first obstacle to Hitler's predatory march across Europe. The first shots of World War II were fired here. This film tells the story of Westerplatte's courageous defenders.
At dawn of September 1st 1939, the "Schleswig-Hostein" battleship approached the Westerplatte peninsula within several hundred metres and opened fire at 4.45, marking the beginning of World War II. The German ship continued shooting for 6 minutes, after which the infantry moved in to the first attack. For about 200 Polish soldiers and their commander, Major Henryk Sucharski, it was the first out of the long seven days of their heroic struggle.

Paul Baumer (Richard Thomas) is a young German who, along with his graduating high school classmates, enlist in the German Imperial Army during World War I. Originally thinking war would be a great adventure, Paul and his friends discover exactly the opposite as the war drags on and one by one the members of the class are killed in action until only Paul remains.

With romantic notions of war and idealistic dreams in his head he undergoes training and then is sent off to the Western Front. In due course, the romantic notions are replaced by the harsh reality of war and he becomes disillusioned with it all.
Paul Baumer (Richard Thomas), a healthy optimist, graduates during World War I and like his twenty classmates volunteers for the German Imperial Army. Their naives romantic illusion starts turning sour during training in Oldenburg under sadistic Corporal Himmelstoss (Sir Ian Holm), who later proves himself a coward at the front, yet is decorated by Kaiser Wilhelm (Denys Graham), unlike many braver boys. Sensitive Franz Kemmerich (George Winter), the friend whose mother made Paul promise to watch over his mate, is the first to perish in the hospital, where amputations and neglect abound, yet when it's Paul's turn to be treated for a wound, he survives. Many friends perish on the French battlefields or in the trenches: hellholes under shell, and toxic gas-threat, full of mud and corps-picking rats, where veteran Stanislaus "Kat" Katczinsky (Ernest Borgnine) tries to teach the ever younger recruits practical survival skills, although often too late. Even easy killing of enemies becomes gruesome when the boys meet a deadly wounded French soldier and hungry girls face to face.

This is an English language film (made in America) adapted from a novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque. The film follows a group of German schoolboys, talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War 1 by their jingoistic teacher. The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young German recruits and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals. As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceptions about "the enemy" and the "rights and wrongs" of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and bewildered. This is highlighted in the scene where Paul mortally wounds a French soldier and then weeps bitterly as he fights to save his life while trapped in a shell crater with the body. The film is not about heroism but about drudgery and futility and the gulf between the concept of war and the actuality.
With the onset of World War I, a group of students are egged on by their teacher and enlist in the German army. As seems to be the case with all wars, the young men march off in the belief that the war will be a short one and they will all soon be home, basking in the glory of victory and treated as heroes. Reality begins to set in at the training depot where their one-time amiable local postman is now their demanding training instructor. Soon shipped to the front, they face the daily challenge of surviving trench warfare and killing on a scale that they could never have imagined. All become disillusioned with their once great cause and many suffer from shell shock, severe wounds or simply are killed. One of them, Paul, manages to survive for several years at the front. After some leave at home after being wounded, he is dismayed to find that little has changed and his old professor is still encouraging his students to bask in the glories of war. Paul returns to the front for the last time.

There is no linear story or dialogue. It's imagery reflects Owen's story, that of other soldiers, and a nurse during World War I. It also includes actual footage of contemporary wars, including World War II, Vietnam, and Angola.
